Decatur County’s veterans service officer told commissioners on July 21 that the county has no local transportation program to take veterans to VA medical centers in Indianapolis or Cincinnati and that he has had to rely on neighboring Rush County to provide rides for some veterans. The officer said he has received at least four recent requests for transportation that he could not fulfill locally and asked the commissioners to consider ways to provide transportation — either a county vehicle and volunteers, or another approach. He also said he is working with the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs and the Indiana National Guard recruiter to set up quarterly, after‑hours briefings for veterans and spouses to explain available benefits and resources. The commissioners acknowledged the requests and asked the officer to pursue options and return with a proposed course of action.
