Planning board continues Van Greenby Road tree removal hearing to Sept. 4

The Lowell Planning Board on July 21 continued a tree removal hearing for multiple trees on Van Greenby Road until Sept. 4 at the request of the Department of Public Works engineering office.
At the meeting staff read a letter from the DPW/engineering office seeking more time to locate replacement planting sites and finalize plans for sidewalk and utility impacts. The notice lists trees at specific addresses with diameters: a 34‑inch tree at 2 Van Greenby Road; a 28‑inch tree at 24; a 40‑inch tree at 29; two trees of approximately 31 and 29 inches at 61; a 30‑inch at 70; and two trees at 75 with diameters of roughly 28 and 23 inches. Staff said the removals were proposed as necessary to maintain the integrity of public sidewalks and utilities and that the DPW asked to continue so it could complete planting plans.
One resident asked when a decision would be made and whether DPW would present a replacement plan if trees are removed; board staff confirmed the DPW’s requested continuance was intended to allow those plans to be prepared and posted online. The board voted to continue the hearing to Sept. 4; no trees were approved for removal at the meeting.
