Staff reported five of seven crossing guard positions are currently filled and noted ongoing difficulty hiring for the roles, with pay cited as the main obstacle.
Council members asked how absences are covered. Staff said school resource officers and on-duty beat officers fill in when crossing guards are unavailable, and school staff will sometimes assist at lower-traffic locations. Council also asked whether overtime would be used; staff said scheduled overtime would not be called in for crossing guard duties — on-duty officers would cover if necessary — and that the interlocal funding covers part-time employees hired specifically as crossing guards.
The council voted to approve the mayor signing the agreement.
