Council Approves Baseball Deck, Extends Rink Removal Deadline; City Readies for State Tournament

The Brandon City Council approved a request from the Brandon Baseball Association to build a donated spectator deck just west of the scoreboard at First National Bank Field and also granted the Brandon Valley Hockey volunteers an extension to remove outdoor rinks at McCarty Park until Aug. 31.
Chris Brown, sponsorship representative for Brandon Valley Baseball, described the deck project and said it would be donated; park staff recommended approval contingent on final sign-off by Parks Superintendent Paul Coughlin and receipt of required building permits. The council approved the project on a motion and second; the staff recommendation requires the building-permit process to verify accessibility standards.
Brown and other association representatives also briefed the council on an upcoming state tournament scheduled to open Aug. 6 and run through Aug. 17. The tournament will bring teams from around the state and the association plans additional temporary bleachers, multiple tents and volunteer staffing; the association said it will coordinate with the chamber and city staff on outreach to local businesses.
Why it matters: The deck and tournament affect park infrastructure, volunteer coordination and temporary parking and access needs. Council members asked whether the deck would require Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations; staff said ADA and code compliance will be evaluated as part of the building-permit review.
Other park actions: The council approved a special-event reservation for the Bluffs neighborhood at Van Buskirk Park and approved a special-event alcohol request for pickleball courts at Aspen Park on Aug. 31. Parks staff also asked for and received a one-month extension (to Aug. 31) for volunteer groups removing outdoor hockey rinks in McCarty Park, citing ongoing volunteer progress.
Details and conditions: The deck approval included the condition that the Parks Superintendent finalize the plan area and that the project meet building-permit requirements; the council recorded the motion as approved. On the hockey-rink removal, park staff reported volunteers are working multiple days per week and have used skid loaders to remove structures but need more time to finish.
Ending: With the approvals, the city will continue working with volunteer groups and the baseball association to ensure permits, accessibility and temporary event logistics are in place ahead of the August state tournament.
