Spalding County’s public-works team was recognized July 21 for its Safety Days training program, and county staff announced changes to collection-center hours and procedures and described cleaning and program plans for the county aquatic center.
Recognition: Public Works Director T.J. M. Burger (presenting) and staff described awards for staff including a certificate for Tobias Daniel from APWA/UGA and a state chapter technical and management innovation award recognizing Safety Days, a hands-on annual training program expanded in 2023 that includes FEMA reporting, incident command, barricade setup and equipment operation. The program has led to new protocols and a live reporting system that relays road closures to the emergency operations center.
Collection centers and aquatic center updates: County staff said the collection-center schedule has been revamped and posted at each site. Centers will be closed Sundays and Wednesdays; on Saturdays all centers will be open 7 a.m.–1 p.m.; other centers have staggered weekday hours (11 a.m.–7 p.m.). Aiken will accept bulky items only on Saturday. County staff also said the aquatic center therapeutic pool is open, that contractors are working on cleaning protocols, and that staff plan periodic deep cleaning and programming during off-hours.
Ending: Commissioners praised the award and asked the public to follow the new collection-center schedule posted at the centers.
