The Van Buren County Commission on July 7 approved several line‑item budget transfers, accepted a $25,937.79 broadband grant and recorded routine contributions and reimbursements, all by voice roll call votes.
Commissioners moved funds to restore a $5,000 uniform allocation for jail staff and shifted $9,875 into deputy payroll lines after committee review. The commission also approved a $221 transfer to cover increased assessor membership dues, accepted a $25,937.79 broadband grant for contracts with a government agency, recorded an annual $1,000 fire/forestry contribution, and authorized $500 for grant committee meeting pay. An overtime reimbursement of $441.40 from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) was also recorded.
The transfers were presented during Committee A’s report, where committee members explained an accidental zero put in the jail uniform line and the need to restore $5,000. Committee A reported that the budget itself had the necessary amounts but several resolutions needed minor amending to match the budget language.
Most motions were moved by Commissioners Kale Crane and Terry Hodges and seconded by fellow commissioners; each passed on roll call with all members voting “yes.” The broadband grant motion was moved and seconded and approved by roll call. A separate amendment to a local purpose tax resolution was made to add $3,360 that had been omitted from the resolution although present in the budget; that amendment was approved after an explanation from county comptroller staff.
Commissioners and staff noted these items were routine fiscal housekeeping: membership dues that post after budgets are finalized, reimbursements from state agencies and grants that must be allocated to specific contract or revenue lines. The comptroller’s office provided a printed report and said the fiscal findings otherwise were favorable.
The commission did not adopt new policy with these votes; the actions were limited to adjusting line items, accepting grant funds and recording reimbursements and routine contributions.
