District reports 19 of 24 hires filled; housing outreach yielding placements for new staff

The superintendent told the School Committee the district has filled 19 of 24 open positions ahead of the school year and described strong community response to housing outreach for new staff.
Staffing updates: the superintendent listed the remaining vacancies as one first-grade teacher, one part-time floating school nurse and several special-services roles — two special-education teachers at CPS, one social worker at CPS and one Tier 3 adjustment counselor at Nantucket High School — as well as roughly six teaching-assistant openings across the district.
Housing: when asked about housing for newly hired staff, the superintendent directed the committee to Melissa Devitt, who handles housing coordination; she reported that local housing outreach and newspaper notices produced many leads. “I have gotten nonstop calls, some really amazing opportunities … Lots of school-year, but a couple really good, year-round,” Devitt said, and staff characterized the response as allowing “almost everybody that has been hired” to find housing options.
The superintendent said special-services positions remain the hardest to fill and emphasized that the district will be creative to meet student needs while recruiting for those roles.
The update was informational. No personnel appointments or contract approvals were decided at this portion of the meeting; the committee later voted to approve two assistant-superintendent contracts as separate agenda items.
