School leaders flag need for AI guidance; district to form advisory and draft policy language

Committee members flagged artificial intelligence (AI) as a priority for policy development and directed staff to begin work this year to provide interim guidance for educators and students. Members cited recent incidents in other districts where students used AI for assignments and then pursued legal challenges; committee members said courts have not accepted arguments that absence of policy grants students a right to use AI without consequence, but that clearer local guidance is needed. Curriculum staff said they plan to convene an advisory committee this school year to develop recommendations for teacher practice and student use while the district drafts formal policy language. Committee members asked that interim guidance include whether AI may be used in class and under what conditions (for example: permitted only when the teacher explicitly allows it, with required citation). Staff said district workshops and leadership meetings had already begun to consider classroom practice and that administrators will present draft guidance and potential policy language to the committee in coming months.
