Athletics director lays out coach hires, facility requests and community events; board approves staffing

Cody also outlined facility priorities he asked the district to consider: completing an auxiliary gym (which would reduce wear on the main gym floor and provide space for PE), adding lights to the baseball field so junior-varsity games would not routinely run late, improvements to tennis courts or multiuse conversions (including portable nets or leveraging nearby recreation district courts), and a hitting/practice facility for baseball and softball. He said coach stipends are another priority to help retain staff.
Cody described two upcoming community events: an Aug. 29 celebration of the 2015 Husky football championship and a mid‑December “Carlson Classic” basketball day featuring multiple boys’ and girls’ games and MVP plaques to honor retired local coaches.
During the meeting trustees discussed possible costs and logistics for field lighting (one estimate in discussion was four to five poles) and whether middle‑school players with activity cards should be admitted to high‑school events at reduced cost; the board asked athletics staff to return with recommendations on discounting and identification procedures for middle‑school attendees to avoid creating an unsupervised “babysitting” situation at varsity events.
In a separate board vote later in the agenda trustees approved certified staffing, including several new hires and transfers. The board also confirmed the transfer of Dana Williams into a middle‑school assistant‑principal role. The staffing motion passed by voice vote with all trustees recorded as in favor.
Trustees asked staff to bring back cost estimates and possible funding sources should the board want to pursue lights, a hitting facility, or expanded tennis/pickleball multiuse courts.
