Historic commission holds Davis Lane deck plans for minor revisions after design concerns

The Nantucket Historic District Commission on July 22 held for minor revisions an application to alter second‑floor deck details at 72211 Davis Lane after members said the submitted drawings did not resolve visual concerns. Commissioners said the current proposal—presented by an applicant representative—kept horizontal wood members above a shingled half‑wall but still left the lower portion visually prominent. One commissioner said the drawings made the lower door area appear as an "overwhelming amount of demolition" in elevation views, and several members said the two‑dimensional drawings exaggerated how the lower section would read from the ground. Members recommended a consistent treatment around the structure so the deck treatment does not become a single atypical design element. The commission suggested returning the shingled returns on both sides of the porch, consider lowering the height of the shingle rail, and match the railing/balustrade treatment across elevations so the detail reads as part of the house vocabulary rather than an isolated feature. The applicant agreed to add the returns and to adjust the shingle‑rail height and other minor details. The commission voted to hold the application for minor revisions and asked the applicant to return with an exhibit that shows the final rail and shingle details. The item was held for minor revisions; the motion to hold carried unanimously.
