District flags $6.3 million in federal grants under state review; tentative budget includes the awards

Tammy told the board that district-specific federal programs identified for state review total about $6,300,000 and are included in the district's tentative budget. The grants named were Title I, Part C (migrant) roughly $83,000; Title II, Part A (effective teachers and instruction/retention) about $3,500,000; Title III, Part A (language instruction for immigrants) about $798,000; and Title IV, Part A (student support and academic enrichment) about $1,900,000. Tammy also said the district received an adult education award reduced to about $406,000. Tammy and other staff noted that although the grants are included in the tentative budget to meet statutory timelines, the district had not yet received all award letters and that reductions or impoundments by the state would require staff to return with budget amendments. She said the 21st Century grant had been released earlier in the week with an award letter still pending and that the 21st Century grant ends July 31 rather than June 30, leaving a modest additional window to receive the award letter. Board members asked whether any of the grants fund salary lines; Tammy said many of the 39 allocations touched approximately 56 positions and that several grant positions are partially funded by grants, not fully funded. No formal action occurred; staff said they will notify the board if awards are reduced or withheld and will recommend amendments if needed.
