The Lakewood Board of Education approved the appointment of Christopher Furrell to the Community Recreation and Education Commission during its July 21 meeting.
Mark Walter, director of community and district activities, presented the nomination and said he has known Furrell since Furrell was a middle-school student. "Given the impact Lakewood Recreation Department and sports programs had on my life, I feel obligated to protect that experience for my kids and all others in Lakewood moving forward," Walter read from Furrell’s letter of interest.
Furrell, who has coached in the district’s basketball programs and works as an account executive for Highland Software, spoke briefly and said he was "grateful and excited" to serve and to "give back to the place I grew up." Board members complimented his volunteer work and coaching experience.
The board voted by roll call; President Katzenberger, Vice President Shaughnessy, Mrs. Clark Sutton, Mr. Callahan and Ms. Dotman recorded "aye," and the motion carried. The nomination was moved out of the human-resources portion of the agenda for immediate vote.
No term length or additional conditions were announced during the discussion; the board indicated the item had been vetted by the CREC interview panel prior to the recommendation.
