An animal‑shelter representative described how the hand‑held scanner is used to read chips implanted along a pet’s back, shoulders or chest and to contact microchip companies for owner information. The presenter said the microchip company sometimes places a privacy alert on an owner’s record, in which case “the microchip company will tell the owner the pet is found and they will provide the information of the finder to the owner so they can get in contact with each other to reunite that pet.”
The shelter asked residents who find a pet to hold the animal and bring it to the animal shelter during business hours, noting that “it is a citable offense to leave a pet unattended at an animal shelter.”
Parish President Jewell also announced the animal shelter adjusted weekday public hours to open at 10 a.m.; staff will still arrive earlier to clean, bathe and provide medical care before public access. The shelter is also open one Saturday each month for resident visits and accepts scheduled adoption appointments outside normal hours.
No formal ordinance or vote was required for the scanner installation or the operational hour change; officials said the items follow best practices and procedures used in neighboring parishes.
