At its July 21 Common Council meeting, city staff reported a busy summer for Parks & Recreation, including strong Aqua Park attendance and revenue, new programming proposals and scheduled park construction.
Parks staff outlined a proposed competition dance team that would run about 25 three‑hour sessions, include costumes and send teams to three competitions in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Dells and Green Bay; tryouts are expected in August and competitions in April. Staff said the dance program had existed previously and interest has re‑emerged.
An adult‑only night at the Aqua Park is scheduled for Aug. 1 with tickets limited to 140 participants; Parks staff asked patrons to buy online. Staff reported that Aqua Park revenue for 2025 has already exceeded prior years’ totals, though exact ticket counts were not provided in the meeting.
The department is seeking design proposals for a skate park with submissions due in August. Wingate Park construction is scheduled to start Aug. 9 with volunteer assembly beginning at 8 a.m.; work will include concrete footings, asphalt and mulch, two new structures and repainting of existing features. The West Bend Sunrise Rotarians have a planting day set for July 26, and park staff plan to convert an adjacent shed to an open‑air shelter.
Council members and the police and fire chiefs praised Parks staff for coordinating large events. The chief reported that the Dirty Ninja Mud Run had 2,382 registrants and estimated overall attendance for the weekend’s events at roughly 8,000–10,000 people in Regner Park, crediting a cross‑departmental cleanup effort that left the park in good condition afterward. Council members noted West Bend Little League will host the Wisconsin State Majors Tournament (12‑year‑old division) Thursday through Sunday at the city’s diamonds.
