Council approves $93,000 purchase of digital screen for downtown stage

The Etobicoke City Council approved a purchase of a digital display and related equipment for the new downtown stage at a cost of $93,000. Staff explained the screen is composed of modular weatherproof panels approximately 9.5 by 19 feet, built to high outdoor brightness standards (10,000 nits), with a 4K-capable processor and integrated audio output to the venue sound system.
City staff said the vendor provides a five-year parts-and-labor warranty and that the supplier has a long-standing service relationship with local institutions. Staff recommended quick approval because the price could rise substantially if international tariffs are applied; staff estimated tariffs could add at least $25,000 and possibly as much as 50% to the vendor price.
The council motion to purchase the screen passed by roll call. Council members said they expect the screen to support event promotion, movies, live acts and advertising during off-hours; staff noted the screen includes automatic dimming for nighttime use and that the city will need to finalize sound, electrical and operating procedures.
Speakers on the item included city staff familiar with procurement and council members who voted to approve the purchase.
