Council approves permits and MDOT applications for 61st Good Old Days Festival Sept. 4–7

The Richmond City Council adopted four resolutions on July 21 enabling the Good Old Days Festival Committee to seek permits and stage events for the annual festival scheduled Thursday, Sept. 4 through Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025.
City staff said most festival events are the same as prior years. Council adopted resolution 2025-6 directing the city clerk to apply to MDOT for permission to close M-19 for the grand parade and children’s parade. Council also adopted resolution 2025-7 to request MDOT permission to close M-19 for the outhouse race on Friday, Sept. 5, and resolution 2025-8 approving a fireworks display on Saturday, Sept. 6.
A fourth resolution (2025-9) approved banner hanging, street and parking-lot closures and the use of the Skinner Drive industrial area as overflow parking for demolition derby participants; staff said that area was requested because participant parking filled other spaces last year.
Councilors said the requests closely followed prior years’ formats, and staff noted the clerk will submit MDOT applications where state approval is required. The motions for the resolutions passed by voice votes.
Why it matters: The festival includes vehicle events (state championship bump-and-run and demolition derby) that require street closures and additional parking arrangements; approval allows the organizing committee to proceed with MDOT applications and event logistics.
