The Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners on July 21 approved Resolution 12 56-25, authorizing the town administrator, special counsel and staff to execute the Purdue Pharma/Sackler bankruptcy plan and related opioid litigation settlements in their entirety, following a recommendation from special counsel.
Staff summarized the town’s involvement in opioid litigation, citing a 2018 resolution that retained special counsel to pursue opioid-related claims. The board was told that in June the 55 attorneys general and eligible jurisdictions agreed to a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family; special counsel recommended the town support adoption of the bankruptcy plan and settlements. "Special counsel has recommended that the Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners support the adoption and approval of the Purdue Pharma Sackler bankruptcy plan and opioid litigation settlements in their entirety," staff said.
No members of the public commented on the resolution at the meeting. The board voted: Commissioner Rutledge, Aye; Commissioner Chismar, Aye; Commissioner Taylor, Aye; Commissioner Chance, Aye; Chair Eddington, Aye. The resolution passed unanimously, authorizing town officials to sign relevant documents and implement settlement steps according to the special counsel—s recommendation.
