Residents press board on budget priorities and online comment rules during public input

During the public-comment period on July 21 several residents criticized the board's handling of budget and development issues and raised procedural concerns about the village's online comment process. A resident identified as the Schneiders asked why the village delays maintenance and repairs until problems are costly, criticized recent employee pay increases while some residents struggle to pay bills, and asked that all emailed public comments be read aloud and responded to by the village. Another resident, Doug Lohman, said he submitted comments via the village website but learned they were not read into the record because they arrived after a 4 p.m. deadline; he asked why that cutoff exists, said the online form text and the agenda text do not match, and requested his comments be read into the minutes. During the joint public hearing later in the evening, members of the public also asked whether property owners in areas added to the sewer-service-area would be required to connect to public sewer (staff said the village historically has not required connection upon area addition), whether property owners in affected areas received mailed notice (staff said no mailers were sent for the hearing), and whether FEMA flood-map updates should be incorporated before final approvals. Village staff and trustees responded: the clerk and administrator explained how comment forms are routed and that the clerk's office can provide records on request; public-works and SEWRPC staff answered technical questions about sewer-area procedures, connection requirements, and environmental-corridor protections. The board did not change public-comment procedures at the meeting, but multiple trustees and staff said they would work to improve notice and follow-up where needed.
