Germantown committee debates future of cable channel 25, orders Spectrum data

The Germantown General Government & Finance Committee discussed whether to continue funding and operating cable Channel 25 as part of a broader review of how village meetings are recorded and distributed. No decision was made; staff will request viewership and subscriber data from Spectrum and return with additional information.

Residents and emailed correspondents raised concerns about equity and access. Melanie Smyth, a resident, urged the village to check whether higher Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District fees and other budget items will continue to affect future finances and also asked for clearer notes on grants in the audit packet. Sarah Larson, another resident, said moving away from cable could disproportionately affect older residents and suggested Spectrum subscriber counts be used to measure impact. An email from Mr. and Mrs. Schneider argued the committee lacks full viewership data and cautioned against assuming all residents have internet or streaming-capable devices.

Village staff described tradeoffs: continuing Channel 25 can require repair and operational costs for aging hardware in the council chamber; streaming on platforms such as Webex and YouTube offers broader reach but requires consistent staffing and simpler procedures. Staff recommended contacting Spectrum to learn how many Germantown cable subscribers can receive Channel 25 and returned data on YouTube/Webex view counts.

No formal vote was taken. Direction: staff will contact Spectrum for subscriber/viewer numbers and return with options for the Village Board to consider during the 2026 budget process. Discussion only: committee examined equity, staff capacity and costs; no changes were enacted at the meeting.
