The Parks and Recreation Commission on July 17 approved two permit applications for Children—s Beach events: a privately organized workout class scheduled for Aug. 3 and the town—s Nantucket Children—s Book Day planned for Aug. 23. The commission conditioned approval of the Aug. 3 workout class submitted by Emma Ellis on receipt of the fire department-required emergency action plan and payment of the permit invoice. The applicant requested space for about 75 participants; the organizer and staff said class participants would use the lawn while the instructor would stand on the bandstand. For the town-sponsored Nantucket Children—s Book Day, staff reported about 12 authors participated last year, roughly 250 books were distributed and peak attendance reached approximately 85 children. The commission approved the town event; staff said eight authors were confirmed so far and Wendy Roulard will be the featured author. During discussion commissioners clarified that Children—s Beach is a public park and paid-event hosts cannot exclude the public. Staff also noted no food vendors or retail sales are permitted at the site without separate approvals. The workout-class approval was explicit that the permit remains conditional until the emergency action plan and permit payment are submitted. The commission instructed staff to notify the applicants of the approvals and to follow up on outstanding permit items before allowing the Aug. 3 event to proceed.
