The Rockingham County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution at its July 21 meeting recognizing the Rockingham County High School Cougar softball team for winning the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 3A state championship on May 31, 2025. County staff read the resolution, which notes the Cougars defeated Scotland High School 1-0 in the championship game and finished the season with a 28-1 record. The resolution singled out the seven seniors and credited head coach Candace Langel and her staff. The board voted to adopt the resolution on a motion by Commissioner Richardson and a second by Commissioner Hall; the vote was recorded by voice as "aye." The resolution named players, coaches, the athletic director and the principal. Coach Candace Langel thanked the board and said the team set a goal at the start of the season and achieved it through hard work. Commissioners invited the team and coaches forward to receive a framed resolution and photographs were taken.
