Finance Committee backs Juan Pablo Gonzalez as assistant auditor; councilors urge independence

The Brockton Finance Committee on July 21 recommended favorably the appointment of Juan Pablo Gonzalez to the position of assistant auditor, a post that will be a three-year term dating to Feb. 24, 2025.
Gonzalez, who told the committee he has served as acting city auditor, said of his time in the office: “the past 4 years have been absolutely insane, and I think probably the best 4 years of my career.”
Committee members emphasized the auditor’s role as an independent guardian of the city’s finances. Councilor Michael Farrell told Gonzalez the office oversees a large volume of money and urged independence: “I want you to make sure you're independent. I want you to make sure you always follow the laws of the commonwealth, the rules and regulations of the Department of Revenue, Division of Local Services.” Farrell added, “Don't let anyone, I don't care if it's the mayor, a counselor, a department head, or anyone in city government, push you to do anything that you know to be wrong.”
Councilor Lally and others praised Gonzalez’s record. The outgoing city auditor, Irene Gianopulos, was cited in committee remarks as having credited Gonzalez with work that helped reduce the city’s deficit. Gonzalez told the committee he began as an intern from Bridgewater State University and worked his way into auditing roles.
The committee motion to recommend the appointment passed without recorded opposition.
The appointment now moves to the full City Council for final consideration at its next meeting.
