During the July 1 administrative meeting, Commissioner Cavallos announced that he will not run for reelection in 2026 and described the decision as a personal choice after long service to the community.

"I have decided that my current term as a county commissioner will be my final one. I will not run for reelection 2026 and thus not seek a third term," Commissioner Cavallos said, reading a prepared personal statement. He told the board he has served nearly 20 years in public office — including 12 years in the Colorado General Assembly and soon to be eight years as a county commissioner — and plans to continue serving through the remainder of his term.

Cavallos said he will remain neutral in the upcoming election to ensure a level playing field for prospective candidates and that he will continue to participate in community activities after leaving office. "In my remaining 18 months, I will continue to serve the people of Larimer County to the best of my ability and give 100% to the job the voters rehired me to do," he said.

Board members thanked Cavallos for his years of service during the meeting. Kristen Stevens, chair of the board, expressed gratitude for his contributions and noted his ongoing role through the remainder of the term.
