Penfield to add ex officio student board members under new state requirement; three students named

Following new state rules, Penfield will include at least one ex officio student member on its board. The district held an internal selection process and announced three student representatives and an alternate for the coming year.
Penfield Central School District announced July 15 that it will include three ex officio student board members and an alternate for the 2025–26 year, following new state rules requiring at least one ex officio student member on boards of districts with a high school.
The district said it ran a multi-step selection process this spring that included announcements on the school morning show, initial and second-round interviews with school leaders and a handoff between the outgoing student representative and the new candidates. The district selected Juliana Costanza (10th grade), Leah Myrna (11th grade), Bridal Elliott (12th grade) and an alternate, Lila Schenck (11th grade). The students will receive training from the Monroe County School Boards Association.
Superintendent-level staff described the selection as intended to broaden student representation by including students who attended district elementary schools and to provide a continuity plan through an alternate. The students are scheduled to begin serving in the fall; staff said the district will provide a job description and communicated responsibilities for the student board members.
