Board approves surplus declarations, claims and special event; denies taxi permit

The Lafayette City Board of Public Works and Safety declared several trash trucks surplus and approved a separate declaration that certain fleet equipment — including a 2023 truck, three salt spreaders and a snowplow — be declared worthless for scrapping, allowing fleet maintenance to trade in or scrap the items.
City Controller Jeremy Deal said the controller’s office reviewed claims totaling $5,913,311.62 and the board approved the claims by voice vote. Purchasing Manager Dave Payne had requested the surplus declarations on behalf of fleet maintenance; those motions were approved by voice vote.
The board also approved a special-event request for the second annual Lafayette City Flea Market scheduled Aug. 30 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.; organizer Angie Patton said the event will largely use the farmers market barricades and that the footprint worked well last year. The board moved, seconded and approved the request.
Police Chief Scott Gallweg informed the board he recommended denial of a taxi-cab permit application submitted by Dakota Johnson; the board approved the chief’s recommendation by voice vote.
