Council approves summer special events including Ankit candlelight, East Downtown Blockbuster and Summer on the Square

Several event organizers appeared before the Lafayette City Council seeking permission for summer special events; the council approved motions to permit the events and related street closures.
Pushpa Topo, founder of the Ankit Foundation, requested approval for the foundation’s third annual candlelight concert to raise mental health awareness. "This event is to raise awareness about mental health issues, reducing stigma associated with mental health conditions, and provide support to individual dealing with health challenges and empower the young generation to seek help and find hope," Topo said. The council approved the Ankit Foundation's special-event request for July 26.
Cindy (event organizer for Stars and Stripes) described plans for the city’s Stars and Stripes celebration in July, noting rehearsals and an event start time at 6 p.m.; the council approved that request.
Patrick Jarbo of Bridal and Company asked for a Main Street closure for the East Downtown Blockbuster on June 7 between 10th and 11th Streets; he said residents in the affected area received notice, the event has coordinated barricades with the fire department and the organizer obtained a one-day temporary alcohol permit. Jarbo also noted a DORA information webpage to explain how the Downtown Outdoor Refreshment Area works. The council approved the street closure.
Nolan Wilhite, president of the Downtown Lafayette Business Owners Association, requested closure of portions of Main, Third and Fourth Streets for Summer on the Square, a juried indie festival on June 28; the council approved that request.
Diana Vice, representing the Daughters of the American Revolution and the America250 For Tippecanoe County Committee, asked to close a short section of Ellsworth Street for a historical marker dedication and children's box parade on June 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.; the council approved the request.
All special-event motions passed by voice vote; organizers confirmed basic public-notification and insurance steps were in process for the events.
