Council expands downtown commercial-first requirement to larger Courthouse Proximate District

The Lafayette Common Council on June 1 approved an amendment to expand the Courthouse Proximate District so that first-floor space in the expanded downtown core must be commercial rather than residential.
Miss Carlson (Economic Development Director) told the council the district was established in 1998 and the amendment extends the existing requirement to the rest of the core downtown to maintain "that historic character of downtown of having that commercial on the First Floor rather than residential." The change had favorable recommendations from the ordinance committee and the Area Plan Commission.
Councilmembers voted 7-0 to adopt ordinance 2025-23 on first reading. No public comment was recorded during the hearing.
The ordinance preserves ground-floor commercial uses in the expanded district; city staff described the amendment as intended to maintain downtown character and support street-level commercial activity.
