Board approves $14,171.16 in change orders for Summer Street reconstruction

The Hammond Capital Improvement Board approved change orders 5, 6 and 7 for the Summer Street Reconstruction project on Columbia Avenue, totaling $14,171.16. The motion was moved by Commissioner Munoz and seconded by Councilman Salinas and carried 4-0.
Staff described three items included in the request: locating and isolating a previously unrecorded 36-inch water main that required additional work; redesigning a sewer manhole structure after encountering a conflict at structure 101; and substituting one manhole type for another that produced a modest price change. "During the course of investigating the closure of the 36 inches water main, we couldn't get a positive shutdown. We had to spend time looking for and eventually finding a water main that was not shown on any of our record drawings," a staff speaker said.
Staff said the $14,171.16 amount presented to the board represents the city's 20% match for these change orders. A board member pointed out an error in the cover letter's table; staff acknowledged the revised cover letter and said the correct amounts are those printed on the board's green sheet and the corrected cover letter.
No additional amendments were made to the change orders. The board did not set a specific deadline for completion of the additional work during the meeting.
