Laurie Stofcic told the Hammond City Board of Public Works and Safety on June 12 that trucks servicing a nearby Strack & Van Til loading dock have struck her house and continue to pose a safety risk.
"Trucks have hit my house. This past time was in October, and then again recently," Stofcic said. She told the board that a NIPSCO meter sits immediately behind her home and expressed fear of a catastrophic impact if a truck strikes that utility equipment.
Stofcic said the loading dock was not present when she moved to the house in 1992 and that periodic truck activity continues at night. Board members asked whether she filed police reports; Stofcic said she filed at least one report in October.
Board members directed staff to request a historical record from zoning and planning on when the loading dock was installed, asked the police department to run complaint records for the address, and asked the city's first‑district inspector (Patrick) to be informed. Engineering was asked to inspect the proximity of the meter. The board voted to forward the matter to engineering, police, zoning and inspections for follow‑up and set a status review for July 10, 2025.
Stofcic told the board she would attend the July 10 status hearing. The board also noted it has a good relationship with the store management and suggested staff may meet with the manager as part of the follow‑up.
