At its June 12 meeting, the Hammond City Board of Public Works and Safety advanced a package of property‑enforcement and redevelopment items: the board authorized advertising bids for multiple demolition properties, set status dates on a rehab agreement, approved several properties for transfer to the redevelopment department, and affirmed a demolition order for 51 Webb.
The board approved advertising for demolition bids for addresses including 4712 Homan Avenue, 6810 Kennedy Avenue, 6831 (corrected to 6833) Kennedy Avenue and several others. Staff noted 6831 on the agenda may be incorrect and the former VFW building is 6833 Kennedy.
On a rehab item, the board set a status check for a rehabilitation agreement covering 7327 Chestnut and asked staff to provide a status report before the agreement expiration; the board set a status date of Sept. 11, 2025.
The board also approved requests from the redevelopment department to place several properties (1134 Conkey, 1136 Conkey, 917 Michigan, 919 Michigan, 921 Michigan, 7232 Grama and 6133 Columbia) into the redevelopment department's name to advance infill residential projects.
In a contested action, the board affirmed a demolition order for 51 Webb. The tax‑sale purchaser, identified as Mr. Abdullah, told the board he plans to rehabilitate the house once he obtains a deed but said he could not act fully until legal ownership is confirmed. Staff and neighbors described long‑standing deterioration and safety concerns. The board affirmed the demolition order, set the matter for status on July 10, 2025, and advised the owner to consult his attorney about what maintenance he may legally perform in the interim.
Other property enforcement items included setting a status for a separate property with loose panels at 5217 Holman; owners reported contractors securing panels and the board set a July 10 status for follow‑up.
