The Hammond Redevelopment Commission voted May 20 to adopt Resolution 2025‑07, ratifying a Hammond City Council determination that the property at 7305 Indianapolis Boulevard is “in need of redevelopment” and authorizing the commission to proceed with the necessary steps to file eminent‑domain (condemnation) proceedings.
Commission attorney Wesson explained the resolution is intended to implement the City Council’s finding and is a prerequisite to filing a condemnation lawsuit under Indiana law. Wesson said the council found the property to be in need of redevelopment and that the commission was being asked to proceed “with the filing of an eminent domain case, so that the property could can be revitalized.”
Wesson described prior enforcement actions and code citations on the parcel, saying the property “has previously received citations, including but not limited to junk vehicles, nuisance violations, the parking lot, the overall condition of the property, and the improvements.” During the discussion commissioners identified a current tenant on the parcel as Cooper’s Garage.
Commissioner Myricks moved to approve Resolution 2025‑07; Commissioner Kobacki seconded. A roll call vote recorded five yes votes and the resolution passed.
The commission’s action ratifies the City Council finding and authorizes the redevelopment commission to take the next steps to file condemnation proceedings. The meeting record did not include further details on timelines, purchase offers made, or final redevelopment plans to follow a successful condemnation filing.
