Commission approves second community mural project with Speak Up Let's Talk About Mental Health

The City Commission approved a second community mural and art project in collaboration with the nonprofit Speak Up Let’s Talk About Mental Health, following an earlier successful mural at North City Park funded by a Golden Arches grant.
Interim leisure services director Shannon Shaffer recapped the first project and presented a preview. Shaffer said the earlier mural engaged local residents and students from Saint Petersburg College and that “this new project will share the same goals engaging youth in meaningful artistic expression under the guidance of a professional artist.” She told commissioners the nonprofit received a grant from the DiBartolo Foundation for a second mural and staff sought commission approval to work with the organization on another mural at one of three parks being considered (Marshall Street, Folly Farm or Safety Harbor City Park).
Shaffer said staff will work with the artist and bring design concepts to the public art committee and then return the final location and artwork for commission approval. Commissioners voted 5-0 to authorize staff to proceed with the next project steps and grant partnership.
No city funding was requested; the project is grant-funded and will follow the public-art review process.
