Council approved an amendment to the FY26 general fund budget to shift contingency funds into the parks program to increase funding for community cultural events and add a women's history event; staff said the change will be balanced by reducing the general government contingency.
The Smyrna Mayor and Council on July 21 approved an amendment to the FY26 general fund to increase the parks department event budget to provide additional funding for cultural events and to reduce the general government contingency to balance the change.
City staff said the adopted FY26 budget included allocations for Black History Month, Juneteenth and Hispanic Heritage events, and that the request was to increase the allocation for each of those events to $20,000 and to add a Women’s History event funded at $7,000. Staff said the increase would be balanced by a reduction in the contingency in the general government allocations line item.
Councilmember Oglesby moved to approve the amendment; Councilmember Gould seconded. Council approved the amendment 6‑0.
Staff presented differing line‑item figures during the meeting; the council action and staff statement that the increase will be funded by contingency were clear, but attendees should consult the adopted budget documents for exact line‑item totals.
