Probation department awarded ACJC grant for drug-detection canine; board approves agreement

Graham County probation officials asked the board on July 21 to accept a grant from the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission (ACJC) to fund a drug-detection canine and related training and equipment; supervisors approved the request.
Probation representative Mr. Andrews said the grant covers the canine, training, travel, and related expenses, and that the department has already begun team training. In response to a board question about geographic limits, Andrews said the grant language allows the county to assist other counties and school districts when necessary. The board asked whether the law permits using the canine in schools to search lockers and look for guns and contraband; Andrews answered, “Yes, sir.”
Supervisors noted operational benefits, including time savings when a canine can clear a house or facility more quickly than a manual search. Supervisor Howard moved to approve the ACJC grant application and acceptance; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Andrews said first in-person training for the team would occur toward the end of the month. The board did not state the dollar amount of the grant during the public discussion.
