The Library Director told the Sweet Home Library Board on July 10 that circulation has begun to rebound after the fiscal-year close and that DVDs remain the library’s most-circulated material. "We do check out around 2,000 DVDs every month," the director said, and added that the collection has grown with donations.
The director said summer reading has seen significantly higher participation: "We’ve had over a 150, elementary school age kids sign up for summer reading so far," compared with about 80 in the director’s first year four years ago. Summer events have been well attended; one program was moved from Sankey Park inside the library because of weather but still filled the building.
On staffing and services, the director said the library applied to the next round of a large digital-equity grant that would fund a full-time digital navigator for up to four years to help patrons with computers, résumés and online job and benefit applications. The director described a recent example of a prospective job applicant who lacked basic internet skills and an email account, and said the position would allow staff to provide one-on-one help "for as long as necessary."
The director also reported community-market activity and local events tied to library outreach: the community market averages about 15–20 vendors per week, the market will combine with the Sweet Home Community Singing Christmas Tree craft and vendor event at the high school this weekend, and the library will provide parking for parade viewers. The director noted an 8-year-old vendor at the market and encouraged youth entrepreneurship.
Operations items included a damaged large-screen television that was replaced and returned to use, and a note that checkouts are typically slower in June but are expected to rise in July and August. The director said volunteer numbers remain below past levels; volunteers typically shelve and process books, prepare programs, and clean DVDs. "We have those that can volunteer have been absolutely wonderful, but there's always, something comes up," the director said.
No formal action was taken on these items; the board received the director’s report and moved on to other business.
