County OKs higher pay for election workers in 2026 budget proposal

Marshall County commissioners approved election-board recommendations to raise pay rates for election workers as proposed by County Clerk Jenny Bennett and included in the 2026 budget proposal.
Jenny Bennett, Marshall County Clerk, told commissioners the Election Board reviewed pay rates and recommended increases. Proposed changes included raising the inspector rate from $200 to $225, the Democratic judge from $170 to $190, the Republican judge from $150 to $175, and most other workers from $140 to $175; absentee ballot counters would move from $145 to $175. Bennett said the Election Board supports the increases and that the total additional cost would be about $6,120 under the proposed rates.
Commissioners asked whether the increases were included in the clerk’s 2026 budget proposal; Bennett said they were. One commissioner said the changes were reasonable given long workdays for poll workers and recruitment challenges as workers age. The motion to approve the proposal and include it in the county’s 2026 budget submission passed by voice vote.
