Resident urges no herbicide use, asks city to review tree clearing on South Hills Trail

Marvin Holt, a Sweet Home resident who identified his address and said he uses the South Hills Trail multiple times a day, urged the Park and Tree and Beautification Committee July 16 to prohibit herbicide spraying along the trail and to examine a large cleared gap where trees were removed between Fifth Avenue and the First Avenue bench. Holt told the committee he is concerned about dogs and people coming into contact with herbicide and asked for additional tree planting on city-owned land adjacent to the trail to restore a wooded appearance. Public-works staff replied they would send crews to check the stretch Holt described but cautioned that much of the land above the trail is private property and that the city’s authority is limited to the trail corridor. Staff encouraged residents to call police if they see people staying overnight in park areas and to report safety issues. The committee directed public works to inspect the area and determine whether city property is affected; no formal policy change or vote was recorded.
