Sweet Home approves permanent asphalt speed humps for First Avenue

The Sweet Home City Council unanimously approved Resolution No. 11 for 2025 to install permanent asphalt speed humps on First Avenue, replacing the temporary modular speed tables that had been in place. The council vote followed staff recommendation and a prior informational discussion in which the Public and Traffic Safety Committee supported a permanent asphalt solution.

City staff told the council that the permanent asphalt speed humps “would provide effective long lasting, traffic calming.” The project was engineered and reviewed by Dyer Partnership, the city’s engineer of record; staff reported six long-term options were evaluated before recommending the asphalt hump solution.

Staff estimated construction materials at about $8,400 plus additional design and labor costs and recommended funding from the transportation fund and/or the general fund. Council members asked clarifying questions about past parking configurations on First Avenue; staff and the city attorney noted prior measures had used parking to narrow travel lanes as a calming tactic.

The motion to adopt Resolution No. 11 passed 7–0. Frank (chair, Public and Traffic Safety Committee) came forward after the vote to thank the council and city staff; he said the devices “will make our streets safer” and will “improve the quality of life for every resident.” Implementation timing and contractor selection were not provided at the meeting; staff recommended the plan and will proceed with design and scheduling.
