Emergency-preparedness committee proposes workshops, urges CERT training for council

The Depoe Bay Emergency Preparedness Committee told the City Council it plans a public workshop this fall to teach residents how to build emergency “go” bags, how to shut off gas and electricity, and how to reduce fire risk on private property.
Joyce, speaking for the committee, said many residents lack basic supplies and that a prequalification for an emergency barrel includes six months of supplies. Committee members proposed inviting utility and fire officials to demonstrate gas shutoff and yard-fire-hardening techniques and suggested selling preassembled “to-go” kits as an option.
The committee also described an in-person CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training sequence that includes hands-on exercises; Joyce reported the final practical drill will be on May 31 at the fire station parking lot with staged casualties and triage practice. She recommended at least one council member take the CERT class and said the committee’s next meeting is scheduled for June 16.
The council welcomed the proposal and staff and committee members agreed to coordinate scheduling and outreach. No formal budget action was taken during the meeting to fund workshops or kits; the committee indicated it would seek volunteer subject-matter experts and possibly grants for equipment.
