HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Youth City Council members on June 26 recapped this year’s Juneteenth events, thanked vendors and volunteers, and announced several community programs including an art show, a cooking class and a youth urban garden.
Council members described hosting a talent show and a cake walk and said the event featured new performances such as hula and drums. “Juneteenth was so fun,” a Youth City Council member said. Members named vendors who appeared at the event, including Burger Depot, Kona Ice and Salt City Scoops.
The council said an art show that was promoted at Juneteenth will award $250 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third; organizers asked interested artists to contact the Hutchinson Youth City Council via its Facebook or Instagram page to sign up.
Members also announced a free cooking class hosted by the NAACP youth at Living Hope Freeway Baptist Church at 5:30 p.m. on the day after the meeting, and they described an ongoing urban garden program run by the NAACP youth for ages 6 and up that meets Saturdays from about 10:10 to 11 a.m. and Tuesdays from 2 to 3 p.m.
Several members thanked community donors who assisted with a personal fundraiser; one member said she raised $103 for a cheer program and thanked everyone who contributed. Council members also encouraged safety over the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, reminding residents to watch for fire hazards and wear shoes around fireworks.
Council members presented these items as reports and community announcements; no formal city or council votes were taken on the events described.
