A commissioner raised concerns that residents at Pioneer President's Place, the former Roosevelt Lincoln School, were being asked to relocate en masse for renovation work and that communication from the property owner to residents had been poor.
A staff member told the commission the property is HUD-subsidized and that temporary relocation for repairs is a process governed by HUD rules pertaining to elderly housing. "They are being asked to relocate during this time," staff said, adding that the letters staff had seen were not eviction notices and indicated the owner was offering compensation and assistance with moves.
Staff advised residents with questions to contact the Human Relations Commission office or the city's community relations office, and to use HUD contact channels where needed. "If it's discrimination, they can come to us," staff said. They also cautioned that HUD manages rules for HUD-assisted elderly housing and that staff could provide HUD contact information but not guarantee the exact HUD office phone number.
No formal action or investigatory motion was taken at the meeting; the item was entered into the record for follow-up and staff offered to assist residents in locating the correct HUD contact and in filing complaints with the commission if discrimination is alleged.
