Salina parks staff told the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on June 17 that multiple construction and landscaping projects are underway or scheduled, with some measures pending City Commission approval.
The board heard that metal shade structures ordered for Barclay Park and hardware for the Parker Park dog park are on multimonth delivery timelines. Staff said the Parker Park fence and concrete are complete but the metal structures are expected to arrive in July; once delivered and installed, staff will open the dog park. For Barclay Park, staff reported a requested change order to expand the gathering area on all three sections and add shade structures; if approved by the governing body the contractor will perform the additional work under the existing contract.
Staff said Oakdale Park’s new pickleball restrooms and exterior improvements were finished just before the River Festival. Lakewood Park’s shelter roof trusses are installed and crews are preparing to put on the roof. Staff also described a bid package being prepared that will include a base bid for a splash pad at Gerry (Jerry) Ivy Memorial Park plus alternates for a water feature, lighting and sidewalks to give the city options based on available funding.
The South Ninth Street median refresh is scheduled to be presented to the City Commission on June 23. Staff described a phased approach: phase one would replace mulch with decorative rock, install colorful year‑round shrubs at the most visible intersection end caps and upgrade irrigation and drip lines; later phases would extend improvements inward along the medians. Staff said the work has been funded in part from the city’s general fund and is intended as a multi‑year program.
Other smaller capital items reported included additional sidewalk and ADA ramp work at Bill Burke Park (ongoing fourth phase of concrete improvements), sand‑volleyball courts planned at Jerry Ivy Park (construction starting mid‑July subject to weather), and roofing and restroom remodels at several parks.
Board members asked staff for timing and sequence details; staff repeatedly referred items that required additional funding or governing‑body approval to the City Commission. No formal commission votes were taken by the advisory board during the meeting.
