Committee directs superintendent to explore easement for Elliott Field improvements

LEWISTON, Maine — The Lewiston School Committee voted Monday to allow district staff to pursue arrangements that would permit Elliott Baseball (Cal Ripken) to explore improvements on fields adjacent to Geiger Elementary School.

Member Hurd explained the request came after the diocese decided to sell South Lewiston Fields, reducing available community field space. Hurd said Elliott Baseball needs a small amount of underdeveloped land next to Geiger to reorient a field and improve drainage and irrigation so it can host more games and tournaments.

Hurd described the plan as conceptual: “There’s no formal plan that’s been submitted for review or anything like that. But, conceptually, I think they need this kind of okay to pursue other things.”

The committee’s recommended motion, carried by voice vote, directed the superintendent to “work with and carry out the necessary arrangements for Elliott baseball to make improvements to their fields.” The motion was seconded and the chair confirmed the item passed.

Members asked staff to keep the committee informed about the scope of any tree removal, the exact extent of land use and whether the district would lease land or grant deeded access. Member Elizabeth Eames suggested a nominal lease, saying, “Can we ask for a dollar a year?” and Hurd said the nonprofit hoped the fields would be accessible to Geiger School and the community if improvements were funded.

Why it matters: The easement could allow a community nonprofit to develop a third full-size field near an elementary school and expand recreational opportunities for Lewiston youth. The request does not transfer ownership of school property.

What’s next: Staff will advise on legal and property details and return to the committee with any agreements or documents needed for formal approval.
