Commenter, a resident, told meeting attendees, "I had 1 job in my whole life. I cut hair for 27 years. I wanted to go into teaching. My friend is a teacher and she told me about the AmeriCorps program and she said it's a great way to find out if I want to become a teacher. I was scared."

The resident said she applied and "went to the interview. They hired me on the spot. And so I went through the training." She described her first day in the classroom: "First day in the classroom, I fell in love with the kids and never looked back."

She concluded by stating her decision: "I realized that I do want to become a teacher."
