Metro Arts and community partners dedicated a new mural at the Luby Community Center on July 16–17, staff told the Public Art Committee on July 17. Staff and committee members described strong turnout at the dedication and said the installation paired historical storytelling with community engagement.
Sonia (project lead) thanked staff, volunteers and partner organizations and noted the event’s mix of speakers and artists. “We have put up the plaque. We also have done a little something new, which is a QR code,” Sonia said; the QR code links to Metro Arts’ website and an on-line key that identifies figures and icons on the mural and explains their significance.
Committee members praised the installation’s quality and the installation team, ArtUp. Metro Arts staff noted broad participation from participatory-budget committee members, artists and Metro departments — including Parks, IT Media and Metro Parks Police — who provided permits, technical support and event services.
Speakers at the dedication included local writers and community historians who shared context about the mural’s subjects, and staff said the QR-code materials were intended to preserve the mural’s educational aspects. Staff also acknowledged vendors and community organizations that provided refreshments and logistics on the day of the event.
No formal action was taken on the mural at the meeting; staff presented the dedication as an informational update and thanked partners and volunteers. Metro Arts staff said they will continue to document and promote the project online.
