Oak Creek to serve as backup 911 answering point for Cudahy under memorandum of understanding

Oak Creek, Wis. — The Oak Creek Common Council on July 15 approved a memorandum of understanding for the City of Oak Creek to provide backup public safety answering point (PSAP) services for the City of Cudahy.
Chief Dave Stecker of the Oak Creek Police Department told the council that Oak Creek has previously provided emergency call handling in short‑term outages and that Cudahy is seeking a longer‑term, formal backup arrangement. "A PSAP is a public safety answering point — that's where all the 911 calls come through," Stecker said. He told the council the July request arose after Cudahy’s emergency center experienced an outage and Oak Creek staff routed calls to Oak Creek as a stopgap.
Chief Stecker said the proposed MOU requires no additional equipment or funding from Oak Creek. "There is nothing additional that we need for equipment, no additional funding that we need at this time. It would just fall under our normal packs that we have for mutual aid when these things happen," he said.
Council members had no further questions, and the council approved the agreement on a roll‑call vote. The approved motion authorizes the city to act as Cudahy’s backup PSAP and to continue coordinating with neighboring PSAPs to ensure redundancy.
The formal MOU aims to reduce the operational risk for Cudahy in case of outages at their primary dispatch center and formalizes procedures staff said the region already uses informally for mutual aid and contingency routing.
