The Fort Atkinson City Council on Tuesday approved payment to a local plumbing contractor to cover emergency replacement of two failed sewage pumps at the police department after the chief reported the basement had filled with sewage.
Police Chief Bob told the council he discovered the failure on June 5 and that both sump pumps, original to the building and about 24 years old, had stopped working. He said he contacted the city's usual plumbing vendor and coordinated with the city manager to authorize an emergency repair that exceeded the department's typical purchasing thresholds. "We reached out to a plumber that we commonly use... they confirmed where that smell was coming from and why it was occurring. So, needed to get fixed as fast as we could," the chief said.
Council approved a motion to apply $12,000 for the pump replacement and related repairs to the police department's building-supply and repair account and ratified the emergency procurement. The chief said the work was completed promptly to restore the facility and that he appeared before the council to comply with policy and provide an audit trail for the expenditure.
The council voted in favor of the payment by voice vote.
