The District 57 Board of Education approved a pre-bid action July 17 for electrical work at Westbrook School that includes replacing an interior transformer located in the courtyard.
Staff said the project went to bid after a pre-bid meeting and that five companies submitted bids. The presentation to the board identified Prospect Electric as the low bidder at $346,000.
During the vote to approve proceeding with the pre-bid contract, Member Leto recorded an abstention and explained later that she works in the industry and that all bidding companies were customers of her employer; she said she would abstain for transparency. Other board members voted to approve the pre-bid action.
Staff also said the district plans to schedule interior work during winter break and exterior work in spring so that the new transformer and related site work will be completed before the next construction phase begins.
The board packet described the Westbrook work as replacing the old transformer that had been located inside the courtyard and moving it to a new location; presenters said the estimate range for the work was between $300,000 and $500,000, and the low bid fell near the low end of that range.
The board did not authorize a final contract award in open session at the July 17 meeting; the motion approved the pre-bid actions and authorized staff to proceed to the contract award step consistent with procurement rules and subsequent approvals.
