The Cibolo Economic Development Corporation on an evening meeting agreed to form a three‑member subcommittee to study possible relocation and restoration of the Red Ball Cafe, staff said.
Staff recommended forming the subcommittee to determine potential relocation sites, obtain vendor estimates for moving the structure and identify repairs or restoration the long‑vacant building would need. "The recommendation from staff ... would be to establish a subcommittee to kind of talk about what the plan would be as far as where we would like to move the building as far as, you know, talking with vendors to get estimates on relocating the building, doing possible repairs restoration because it has been vacant for quite some time," said Isabella Ellis, economic development staff.
The subcommittee was named from board volunteers during the meeting. The members identified in the discussion were Patricia, Stosh and Justin. Board members did not take a formal, recorded vote to create the subcommittee; the chair announced the membership on the record and moved the process forward.
Staff told the board that the planning and economic development departments had provided preliminary estimates during the earlier review and that further vendor quotes would be needed. "So that's really kind of all we're doing with this item today is possibly establishing a subcommittee that would be interested in kind of further discussing this as an item that the board would like to move forward with," Ellis said.
A member of the city historic preservation committee told the board the committee had not previously considered the Red Ball Cafe and said committee members "never heard" about the building and therefore had no recommendations at this time. The board did not adopt any restoration contract or budget at the meeting; the subcommittee will return with proposed next steps, cost estimates, and any recommendations for formal action.
Board members who want details or to participate further were instructed to coordinate with staff for scheduling and vendor outreach; staff said the subcommittee will also consult other departments as needed.
The matter will return to a future public meeting for any formal approvals of relocation, repairs or funding.
