The Salem City Council on July 17 approved a $51,100 appropriation from the general stabilization fund to begin repairs at Salem Fire Department Station 2, after an engine struck a bay doorway while backing into the station.
Councilor Merkel, who moved adoption by roll call, said the funds are for the first phase of work: interior demolition to evaluate structural damage. City staff said nobody was injured and apparatus were not damaged, but the bay door and surrounding structure sustained damage requiring evaluation.
Councilor Stott added that clearance is tight at the North Street station — ‘‘about 2 inch clearance on either side’’ — and said staff are pursuing insurance reimbursement and may adjust the opening to increase clearance.
The council approved the appropriation by roll call vote (10 in favor, 0 opposed, 1 absent). Officials said the city will pursue an insurance claim that may offset costs and that design work is needed to determine scope and next steps.
